One day after University of Florida freshman Sam Riffice earned All-America tennis honors, he did something arguably more noteworthy.
During the single portion of the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, he knocked out the second-seeded player. Riffice eliminated Ohio State’s JJ Wolf 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a 16-game round on Wednesday.
Riffice advanced to the quarterfinals and on Thursday is scheduled to face Illinois ‘ Aleksander Kovacevic. Kovacevic continued when Wake Forest’s Bar Botzer withdrew due to foot injury.
Riffice, the year’s SEC Freshman, is unseeded.
Riffice became the freshman player of the seventh men’s Gators on Tuesday to become an all-American — and the first in singles since Jesse Levine in 2007. He won that distinction in the round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Daniel Cukierman from the University of Southern California.
Also honored as an All-American was UF’s Oliver Crawford. He lost 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday to North Carolina’s William Blumberg.
Riffice helped the Gators advance in the team competition to the nationals, where they lost in the semifinals to the eventual Texas champion.
Saturday is scheduled for the individual finals. This is the first time the NCAA nationals have been hosted by the USTA National Campus.
